Think of the best boss or coworker you have ever had. Get a good solid picture in your head (Some of you are having difficulties just with that first part).
Now think – what makes that person good at what they’re doing? Is it a skill? A set of skills? Some knowledge?
Here’s an even tougher question: Could you be a great leader?
In my head I try to distance myself from being a leader. I haven’t had a lot of great inspirations in that department, so I tend to think leaders or people in positions of power are hypocrites or somehow bad. I have to constantly challenge myself and realize that a leader isn’t just someone who tells other people what to do. A leader is someone who properly leads himself. What if that was your operating definition of a leader. Would it make you think twice about what it takes to be a good leader?
Good leaders know themselves before they even try to know other people. What we often call ‘natural’ leadership is just someone leading from the inside out. They’ve done the work within themselves before they even try to put something on your shoulders. Someone who has done that is someone you can trust, and someone who you want to achieve for.
So let’s go back another question – Could you be a great leader? In your family? In your friendships? In your community? What strategies have you tried and how well have they been working?
Think how much the world would change if leadership meant the courage to make decisions about ourselves rather than about other people. Imagine how things would be different if your boss operated this way. Imagine how things would be different if YOU operated this way.
